DJ FUNK Has Little Time Left. Here’s What We Can Do
There was a time when I was deeply into ghetto techno and ghetto house—artists like DJ Godfather, DJ Assault, and DJ FUNK. I eagerly anticipated their performances in Japan and had the chance to see DJ FUNK play live multiple times.
To be honest, there was one night when I was disappointed by his performance. He was too intoxicated to engage the crowd, and for the first time, I witnessed genuine boos at a DJ event. Frustrated, I even wrote about it on social media.
But looking back, I now realize that this, too, was part of who DJ FUNK was as an artist. His music embodied a sense of freedom, spontaneity, and unpredictability—every party had an element of risk, and perhaps that was part of the thrill.
Now, DJ FUNK is battling stage 4 cancer, and his family has launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover his funeral expenses.
His music, often considered simplistic, was nonetheless used by countless DJs—including legendary ones—to ignite dance floors. I, too, bought his records and mix CDs and was influenced by his work. The fast-paced dance music you listen to today may very well carry echoes of DJ FUNK’s impact.
DJ FUNK left a mark on countless DJs and listeners. I was one of many who looked forward to his performances and loved his music. Right now, I find it difficult to put my emotions into words.
